Rachna Singh pushed out by the NDP for running in Surrey

Rachna Singh who served as the Minister of Education and Child Care in the NDP government has been pushed out of running in this provincial election on October 24th.

She represented Surrey-Green Timbers riding from 2017 until 2024. A member of BC NDP caucus, she has served as Minister of Education and Child Care from December 2022 until 2024.

She ran again for the NDP in the new Surrey North riding in 2024, but political newcomer Mandeep Dhaliwal won this riding for the Conservatives with 50.67 per cent of the 15,697 votes cast, topping two-time MLA Rachna Singh (NDP), who said Sept. 23 that she’s considering another run in Surrey North but had not been approached by NDP officials to do so. Anti-SOGI campaign was a factor in Singh’s loss.

Dhaliwal is in the race again for the B.C. Conservatives, against Sahib Thind for the NDP. OneBC has now named Tanya Gupta, a business owner and Notary Public.

Singh had a meeting with Premier Eby before he went to although she advised him not to go due to allegations of transnational repression and the Indian government’s connection to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar at the Guru Nanak Gurudwara. She was the only NDP MLA to go to Guru Nanak gurdwara to show solidarity with Nijjar’s family.
