A Bachata film Agridulce by Frank Pavich is a moving movie that will entertain you at VIFF this year.
Set in Cabarete in the Dominican Republic, the documentary film follows young musicians at the Academia de Bachata. Filmed across five years, the music documentary is an ethnographic portrait of youth that explore their existence through bachata.
Bachata, which emerged from marginalized Dominican communities with songs of love and heartbreak with Afro-Caribbean musical traditions has become one of the country’s most recognizable cultural exports.
The characters in film are very endearing. The cinematography weaved with the music takes you through stories that find meaning what bachata means to these young people as they understand their identity and place in the world.
