Wildwoman hits the Gateway stage in Richmond. Based on the controversial true story that inspired Beauty and the Beast, Kat Sanier’s historical play is a modern take on the story of Catherine de Medici, the young, newlywed of King Henry II of France, who thinks her life at court will be a fascinating forum of political discourse. Instead, the palace is a cruel and disturbing place where her singular function is to be a baby-making machine for male heirs.
This is common story of patriarchy where a woman’s role is to produce a male heir for the state. This story also shows the beasty side of politics and exploitation.
Synthia Yusuf, who recently Co-stared in Frozen, plays Catherine de Medici. She is witty rumbunctious and spicey is this roller coaster tale with twists and turns that makes history which shows what rulers will do for power. She is definitely a rising story to watch on the Vancouver Stage. Wildwoman is on the Gateway Theater in Richmond BC until April 4th.
